LOL. As to why go there, it could be because he either wanted to show the big kids he could take a punch in the arm without crying, or because he believed in the cause the monies raised was going for, or both. The roasts generate monies for different charities. Matt's roast was to benefit both education of the arts and a scholarship in Tim Russerts name. Could be, since he's involved in education, and he's a political news junkie, either cause might have had him wanting to attend

There is a weekly magazine called "The Week" which I consider to be a cut above Newsweek or Time (not too difficult a feat to achieve). Most of the articles are about National and International news and both sides are usually represented. They do have one page that features very brief celebrity news. I don't usually read that page, but today for some reason I did. Here is a sampling of this week's celebrity news. Names have been left out. ____thinks a stint in jail did him some good. ____had already separated from his wife before going into treatment for sex addiction ____admits that he had sex with his stepmother when he was 12 ____(a sports figure) was arrested for speeding and DUI ____'s boyfriend posed as a rep. of the Vatican and swindled people out of millions of dollars ____had her exhusband in mind when she dedicated a song at her conert to "the emotionally retarded" But, I didn't see any shocker on that page that said, "Clay Aiken sat through a roast for Matt Lauer and maintained his dignity while insults were hurled at him." You, know, I think Clay is doing just fine.

Many more good things than I will ever do, I'm sure. At least on a larger scale. I would never deny that they are wonderful people who do wonderful things. However, all the wonderful things in the world that a person does cannot negate the bad that we also do. If something is wrong, it is wrong whether we help every last person in the world. If I have a dear sweet child who eats all his supper and goes to bed without whining and cleans up his toys, and brushes his teeth every morning and night, but he also likes to eat dirt (some kids do), does all the good negate the one bad thing? Do I not try to get him to stop eating the dirt because, after all, look at all the good he does? No, I praise him for the good and I do what I can to stop the bad. And even if I can't do a thing about it, that doesn't change my understanding that it is bad. I'm a perfect example of that too in some people's eyes I'll bet. I think I've done a good thing or 2 in my life by reaching out to others and volunteering, etc. But I'll bet in many people's minds all these good things don't negate the fact that they think I must be from Mars for some of the views I have. Good and bad, good and bad, we all have good and bad. Pointing out those things that are wrong doesn't mean you don't appreciate the good. JMO.

The bigger question that I have, and that I always have in these types of threads and issues, is this--Why do fans think they have the right to "point out" and decide what is "good" and "bad" for someone else--especially Clay? Why do fans think it's okay to be so judgemental, especially towards someone they don't even know? Someone who isn't a family member, isn't a friend, isn't even an acquaintance? Come on guys, you are just a fan of a celebrity. That's it. No more. No less. Just a fan. Clay is a grown man--free to be who he wants to be, free to go where he wants to go, free to see who he wants to see, free to say what he wants to say and do what he wants to do. We have absolutely no right to say what he does or thinks is good or bad. None whatsoever. It's his life. Period. I guess I also don't understand why things have to be hashed and rehashed over and over and over again. I really wish that there were time frames in place for such discussions--maybe 48 hours after an event to discuss it and then the thread goes bye-bye. I just don't see the point in it continuing once it reaches the place that most threads reach--the place where wagons have indeed been set up, with people repeating the same things they've already said or that someone else already said perseveratively. There is so much negativity in this world, and most particularly in regards to every single thing Clay does. Will it ever end? Sadly, I think not. Mods, what do you think? Can there be time limits on certain things? Or can this (and future threads that are sure to go the same route) go on indefinately?

Just because he took part in this does not automatically now make him a bad man but that's exactly what some are saying here. This event raised alot of money for charity. It's traditional for it to be what it was. I'm sorry but we have no right to tell Clay what he should or should not do. Sorry but right now I'm really ticked off.

I am just going to flip the parts that I bolded so that they read like this: And things that are perceived as bad do not negate all of the good that a person does, either. Pointing out things that are good is always better than focusing on what is perceived as bad. (I had to add "perceived" because I didn't see that Clay did anything bad.) I think it is okay that we don't agree on this. To me it is the difference between seeing the glass half full and half empty. It is the difference between focusing on the positive rather than on the perceived negative. In the end, things are never black and white. This is not going to be resolved. When I left, Clay had just been injured at Spamalot so I've been so worried about him! I'm glad to see he was able to attend the roast and he's looking mighty fine in those promo pictures! I don't think I'm allowed to post them since they are "labeled" but he sure is a long, lean drink of water! Sorry to read about all the angst over his participation. Not my idea of "humor", either, but most of the stuff I hear these days isn't my idea of "music", either, so I'm not upset. Unfortunately gay folks and fat folks are just about the last groups that it's OK to make fun of, even NOT in a "roast" situation where vulgarity is the norm. I hate the fact that "gay is the reason" for a joke more than any vulgarity. Off to hope for a stage door tonight!
