I guess you should take this up with Clay because he's the one who said it
I think people interpreted that as what Clay said. Whether he did? I spoke to someone who was at that M&G personally and they had a very different interpretation of what Clay said. Apparently they didn't think Clay said anything like what was reported here in this thread. And now we're finding out that Clay was heard to say payola and gifts was the #1 reason. Well I heard nothing like that when this was first reported. in this thread From the description I'd have thought it was said payola did't happen and it was all fan behavior. And now I ear something very different.
Why say 'real payola doesn't exist' if Clay apparently listed that as the #1 reason for lack of play? Makes it seem like the report was missing key information that made Clay's comments seem more focused on fans than they really were. And that makes me question the interpretation of the M&G even more. The person I spoke to heard nothing about fans being responsible for lack of play. Just advice like requesting in your listening area and doing so in a nice way. He gave them ways to help the situation that was caused by the businesses involved and ONLY the businesses involved.
As I said earlier, I believe Clay was asked a touchy question and was put on the spot and because of that danced around the issue. Because he couldn't state things clearly, people filled in the blanks with their own views of things. And came up with very different messages.
I can only go with what I heard Clay say with my own ears And that's what he said at Newark about how you can get a song played if you pay for it. And that's exactly what I believe. I trust Clay and I trust what I heard him say with my own ears.
