Hi ladies--lovely sunshine tioday--cold and LOTS of snow, but bright! Marion's car got stuck in the neighbor's front yard--she couldn't get up my
drive....not a happy camper. Oh yes Donna, I think you'd agree--sometimes we just have to laugh at life and all its little dramas, right? I believe I will
only be affected by someone's attitude, etc as far as I allow myself to be....never give them the "power" to take away my joy. Usually
works--sometimes it doesn't.... then I cry.
Sande, yes I knew about the Chinese zodiac thing--just didn't know what the year of the rat meant. Is it a good year? Doesn't SOUND so nice. We used to belong to a gourmet club and in February, when the Chinese year is celebrated we would go to a restaurant and eat our way through TWELVE courses. Of course we didn't eat all of them, but chose what we really wanted, but I found it fascinating that there would be so many courses. Thanks for posting the years--very interesting. You are a great source of information, my friend! Good move to start a new Cottage page. How strange that we can go on forever??? So you did get Apples to Apples? Good price--I think I paid $29 for it. I think you're right--college kids seem to love it. Christopher had a little party at his house--the one he shares with three others near the campus--but, poor kid got a sore throat and felt really bad so he spent the whole night in his room. He's much better today however and is snow boarding today....funny how a thick blanket of snow can cure a sore throat.... Children feel so many different emotions that parents are not aware of, don't you think, Sande? It is sad that you had those feelings about your parents, but you KNOW they love you--in their own way and probably much more than you realized. All we can do as parents is try our best, right? Angie how are you doing? Please let us know. We miss you.
I have to prepare my lessons etc for next Monday when BSF starts again. Been putting it off, so good to have no deadlines for a few weeks. Oh well...nothing lasts forever. Have a good evening everyone. See you tomorrow. |

Yeah, I kinda felt the same way growing up. I wanted to be a better parent than that. I don't know if I managed the 'touchy-feely, sharey'

Good evening....
Hi Angie! Good to see you. Goodness, that was a low low price to pay for Apples to Apples. Maybe it hasn't caught on yet in Canada? I think it's better played by adults--it is meant to be for twelve - to adult, but I think more like sixteen or eighteen. Hope you enjoy it. Here's wishing that this new year will be a MUCH better one for you Angie--you've had a tough year, haven't you? Donna, that is our weather forecast too--warmer in the next few days and right now in the teens with a bitter wind chill. I don't understand how the kids can go skiing for HOURS when it's this cold. Hey Donna, when you find that doctor who makes "major personality adjustments", let me know OK? I heard there was snow--somewhere in FLORIDA-- so you must be feeling the cold too Sande? Shocking the way global warming is affecting us isn't it.....
Goodnight ladies. Keep warm. |

hi...
Just popping in... To say... I hope everyBuddy is staying Warm...
Be back later to catch up... Have a Great saturday! toodles... ......................... hi again... Where is everyBuddy this weekend...Where's Bubbles? How nice to see you Angie...I hope things are off to a good start this new year... Was Josh on va-ca? That must have been nice...
Ahhh ClaysLady...I always think of you and Holly as "best friends"...you two seem to share a LoT...
Claybella...I'm glad your mom's health has improved
so Much! That's Great!
Although I'm sorry your mom is
sometimes difficult to get along with... ...you could try moving to another state.
Claybella...I don't resent my parents. Not that anyBuddy is particularly curious... Claybella...so your honey has LoTs of games... My scott just bought a game the other day...the Rock Band Bundle. We have dance revolution too...you might like that because it's quite a workout! Do you 2 have Sims... you might actually like that. About Sims... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sims Stars...it was cold here...in the teens...but not now. It's warmer again. I heard there was snow in florida...but that doesn't mean much... Is it warming up you guys way? They say it'll probably be a nice 60 degrees for the vote in new hampshire tuesday. Next week all the candidates are headed to south carolina. There's a presidential debate on tv now. Speaking of tv... Jimmy Kimmel is gonna be a guest on Leno...and Leno is gonna be a guest on Kimmel's show This Thursday. I'll watch...
Stars... I didn't watch the Apprentice either... I forgot. I ended up watching "Around the World in 80 Days" on the Disney Channel...(I think that was the night) This was the newset version with Jackie Chan and the Wilson brothers...Owen and Luke. I liked it better than the "old" david-niven one. Who's gonna watch How to Look Good Naked...
Bubbles the last episode ...with the tornado...was the spoiler I was sharing a couple months ago...the spoiler was a tornado was hitting the neighborhood. That WAS a good episode! Of course I'm SURE Lynette's family is safe. They had "a" Sweeny Todd on tv last night...No Johnny Depp But I would also like to see the Kite Runner. It looks like a Great movie. And it's true...(right?) I know the book was a fave of Clay's...did anyBuddy read it? There's some interesting movies coming out this year. Like... The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. A story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It's about a man who ages backwards...grows younger. Starring Brad Pitt...and Julia Ormond is in it too. She's in one of my fave movies "Sabrina"...(with harrison ford) This is the 2nd movie with Julia and Brad...since they were in Legends of the Fall together. Brad looked Gorgeous in that!! (Tristans are always Cute
My matt's band mate's last name is Pitt...I wonder if there's any family connection to Brad. He's tall and blonde too...and seems to be a girl magnet. Speaking of new movies... and cute blonde guys...
There's a new Batman this year...and Heath Ledger is gonna play the Joker. (He was on tv today...that's why I'm thinkin' of him.) Claybella...I like to watch the previews and the deleted scenes on dvds... ...but that's about it. Have you tried getting movies from the library. They usually have a decent collection...and they're Free.
That's nice you got your Clay concert. I'm still bummed I missed the skating thing on christmas. Does anyBuddy else ever watch PBS? The british comedies were always my fave.
In the news today... I can NOT believe that court case where some guy on death row is suing that lethal injection is cruel and inhumane. Yet he shot 2 innocent people....well 2 police... to death. The inmate says he wants to die with some dignity. How can this case even BE?! This murderer certainly didn't care or worry about what his victims were feeling....did they die in a dignified "humane" ...non-painful... way? They should just shot him like he did his victims. bye-bye...

Good Morning gals!
LOL LOL LOL Donna....Man..when you find the Dr who does attitude adjustmets....you tell me! LOL i think we all know a few people who need them..i think I needed one yesterday! Sande...how was your mom over the holidays? This week? I bet things wore her out very quickly! Thinking of her! Katherine...did you get all your prep work stuff done? I know you were scrambling to get your study stuff done and Im sure it was even harder with Audrey going back to school this weekend. All the business starts again right? I have mixed feelings...the kids were starting to drive me nuts..LOL...but its also frustrating too witht hem gone just being here cleaning or whatever. Be a little different if I felt better and was out working or out and about. I may try to see if I can handle working again. nervous but wont know unless I try right? And..its only one day at a time..I can trudge through anything for a day. Sande...our kids saw Ratatouille at the theatre when it came out. We dont go to the theatre very often but we did see that one. It was cute!!! I LOVED Legends of the Fall too when i saw it. Cant remember it very well anymore but I know I liked it AND thought that Julia Ormond was very good,,,,,just her facial expressions were very powerful. Our second car which was NOT reliable..blue ford contour...1995 with TONS of kms on it died. SO weve been scrmabling to figure out what to do. My brother used to sell cars so he has connections . LONG story short...we got a used Honda Civic Si with a sunroof....lol....two door...pain but little more sporty....for 3,000 LESS than they were asking on the lot. Apparently the dealership made $160.00!!!!! CRAZY instead of about 3,000.00 profit. What a nice man. he doesnt know us...just my brother....so what a kind thing to do. Not many people out there like that!!! So we are thrilled. Everybody is gone today...so I HAVE to take down Christmas stuff. I hate that part...fun putting it up but now this is a pain. LOL! I see the Urologist specialist on Wed..mabey he can help me. I may have a lead on a family Dr too so Katherine...YES..this year may be looking up already!!!! YAH!!!! I sure need it! Mel....girlfriend...Where are you????? Pop in kay? Maureen...feels like Spring today...nice...but its almost like a tease. I want the warm weather NOW!!!!!! LOL LOL LOL! Now that Christmas is over Im sick of this already! Hi Suzi...hope the family is doing well and that you have a great start to the new year! Have a great day gals! PS...has anyone heard if the show 24 is coming back soon? |

But I would also like to see the Kite Runner. It looks like a Great movie. And it's true...(right?) I know the book was a fave of Clay's...did anybody read it? Sande...I read the book. The book is excellent. Why don't you read it first. A true story you ask. I think it is a fictionalized account of a jumble of things that were quite possible. I am sure the author took occurring things and wove them into a story to grab the readers attention. Like The Titanic. I really do recommend reading it. One of those I can't put this book down stories... I do get stuff out of the library. I just borrowed Season Two of The Wire...and, All 13 episodes of the British John Cleese comedy Faulty Towers over New Year's. Ya gotta love Basil!
Angie...Wow! about the great car deal! Now that is what I call a bar-gooon!!! Good going. That is a lot of moo-lah to save...Yea!! I wish I had extended time off to put my house in order. Maybe fit some good workouts in. One can dream.....but, I wonder if I would be constructive with my time. It would be a shame if I just wasted the time and played on the internet. God did give me a lazy bone....
I hope all your organizing for your new session is going swimmingly, Katherine. We are having exceptional weather also. Great for driving. Long may it last!!! Melissa, Melissa...Oli Oli Oxen-free!!! (Oxen-free..it is what we used to say..not quite sure of the spelling) OK...Come out, come out...Where ever you are!!!

Hi ladies. Warm weather still here today, but it's going to change tonight I hear... oh well.
I agree about that "inhumane" death sentence, Sande--we will eventually PC ourselves to death trying every which way to coddle the criminal and punish the victim. Stop the world--I wanna get off! Yep Angie, I do miss Audrey. She was staying here for two weeks before she left for school again and it was just SO nice having her around. We're on the same wave length in many ways. A blessing. First day back at BSF was really neat, thanks. So good seeing all the others again and getting back into this wonderful study. I know what you mean, Angie--when the kids are gone again, the house seems so empty (until you get used to it)--and you miss them. That is SUPER news about your new car! Gosh, what a bargain! Nothing worse than having wheels that are unreliable, right? We rely so much on our cars in this country--except for big cities like New York, I guess. As I've t old you before, Steven loves being without a car and all the problems that go along with it. When he wants to drive south, to France, etc. he rents a car. Quite a change for him--he drove sports cars while he lived here and was a speed demon at times too. Never thought he would lose his love of driving. Donna, I LOVED Faulty Towers, too. John Cleese is just fantastic--I just have to see his face to start laughing. The Wire? Don't think I've heard of that, but I'm going to ask at the library. Is it something I would like, do you think? My alltime favourite long series of course is "Monarch of the Glen"--INCREDIBLE. I'm still in love with the hero.... I haven't read Clay's fave book either--maybe I'll get it this week. The last good book I read (a tear jerker) was The Book Thief -- based on a true story. I highly recommend it. I'm off to breathe some of the wonderful fresh air now, maybe walk around the lake. So cute--yesterday, as I stopped at the bottom of my drive to get the mail, I saw a young mother with her triplets walking around the circle. She had them in a little "train" and all the attached cars were a different colour. Adorable! They're just under a year old, two girls and a boy who smiled his beautiful, wide gap-toothed smile all the while we were talking. I SO wanted to "borrow" him for a while.... Take care, my friends. |

HBO's The Wire.....
It spits out a pre-loaded sheet of paper that says "FALSE" an instant after the kid has denied the crime. Seeing this, he falls apart and spills everything. Detective "Bunk" Moreland, savouring his triumph, pronounces a sweeping assessment of humanity: "The bigger the lie," he chuckles, "the more they believe." And with that, viewers were alerted to the theme that will carry "The Wire" through its fifth and final season - escalating lies and misplaced faith in Baltimore. "The Wire" is a series that has been hailed with almost tiresome consistency as TV's best drama by anyone who watches it, and - no lie - this season is the best yet. The HBO series is shown in Canada on Movie Central and The Movie Network. It has always been a study of intertwined and often clashing institutions in a troubled town: the police, the politicians, the labour force, the failing schools, the drug gangs in Baltimore's squalid projects (the series title refers to surveillance by the narcs). It's a world where, too often, people focus on their narrow self-interest, where doing the right thing is no path to success. No wonder in this system, lies become the currency with which most business is transacted. But this season the dilemma is worse than ever. The city is in economic crisis, with budget cutbacks crippling an angry and demoralized police department. Police vehicles aren't being serviced and cops aren't paid their overtime. "How are we ever gonna pay the bar tab?" grumbles Det. Jimmy McNulty as he orders another round. "We could always knock off a liquor store," says his bar-mate Bunk (Wendell Pierce). "The Wire" is a drama crisscrossed by numerous story lines and a crowd of powerfully drawn characters (24 actors are listed in the opening credits). But McNulty (played by Dominic West) is at its core, particularly this season. His roguish, arch indifference masks a righteous streak in full force now. For a year, he was part of an investigation into the murders of 22 vagrants whose bodies were found abandoned in city housing. It's a serial crime that points back to one of the city's most notorious drug kingpins. But now the probe has been shut down due to budget cuts. McNulty is beside himself over the wasted effort, and the likelihood that those killings might go unavenged. But things are tough all over. This season, an institution of the media is feeling the pinch. The Sun, Baltimore's foremost newspaper, would seem poised to be an invaluable beacon. But as depicted on "The Wire," it, too, is compromised by economic woes. Talk at the paper dwells on looming cutbacks, layoffs and buyouts. Under new conglomerate ownership, the mandate has become: do more with less. "Someday, I wanta find out what's it feels like to work for a real newspaper," cracks one of the reporters, knowing full well that, whatever a "real" newspaper is, it's an endangered species all over. "The Wire" was created by David Simon, a former police reporter for The Sun who clearly loves the newspaper tradition, but hates the growing trend of papers as commodities. In a media culture where public service is forgotten, mischief routinely goes unchecked. Soon, a big lie will take hold and take over, undetected, right there in the newsroom. Meanwhile, McNulty devises a lie of his own - a scheme to kick-start the "rowhouse murders" investigation. However well-intentioned, he is playing a dangerous game, even as he justifies it as a logical response to the misplaced priorities of the powers-that-be. "Wonder what it feels like to work in a real (expletive) police department," he says bitterly. Masterminded by a cop and a reporter, here are two deceptions far removed from one another. But each will feed on and inflame the other. As the season unfolds, a city continues to sabotage itself. But however bleak, "The Wire" packs an ample measure of bitter humour. For instance, the drug dealers have their problems, but - unique among the groups depicted on the series - limited funds isn't one of them. "I got TOO much money," says ruthless gangster Marlo Stanfield (Jamie Hector), who just can't launder his cash fast enough. "Proposition Joe" Stewart (Robert F. Chew) understands: "Ain't enough mattresses, is there now?" he chuckles. Devotees of "The Wire" know how engrossing, rich and downright addictive it can be. The rest of the TV audience, after letting the series slide by unacknowledged for four seasons, needs to know it's not too late to get on board. And while the experience of watching "The Wire" is cumulative, this final season is largely self-contained - newbies won't be at sea. The rewards from the writing, the actors and the potent story line are almost beyond measure.
I am going to check The Book Thief out....

Thanks Donna, for the quick reply to my question about The Wire. I was really interested so I asked about it at my library yesterday. They can get it for me
apparently but they said it is extremely graphic. Now I'm torn--I LOVE that kind of story line and of course your trusted opinion that the acting etc is
"brilliant" but violence turns me off. I wish I could get past it and see it for being an integral part of a good police story.... still thinking
about it. I'm really curious now. Sounds like a winner.
Morning everyone--do you have the high winds we have?! Have a good day, my friends. |

Angie...that's SO GOOD about your "new-to-you" car! It's SO nice to have someone that can help you like that. I'm so hApPy-N-excited for you that you got a good deal on something you really liked and wanted.
Hondas certainly have a good reputation...What color is it? I bet you feel so spiffy in your sporty little car. Angie... I'm SO glad you may have found a doc to help you too!
Asking about my mom... she's doing okay. The chemo must be working some...because
the fluid is not coming back like it was before. Since she can "breathe" she feels a lot better...and has been fairly busy. She went to get a
donated wig from a beauty shop the other day...and was taking the cat to the vet.
Unfortunately the kitty didn't wanna go in the carrier...and really ripped my poor dad's skin
up...Especially since he's 84 and has frail skin.
My parents have 3 kitties... 2 declawed and one with claws...Shadow. It was Shadow who got him...(not that
Shadow is a mean cat...not at all...he just freaked and my dad didn't have a towel... which he SHOULD have!)
It IS good my mom feels okay...especially since there's NO cure for ovarian cancer. Actress Andie
McDowell even has that commercial talking about there's NO cure. And it was just a year ago...well 2006...Patsy Ramsey died from ovarian cancer...and she
had all kinds of money to buy the best health care. So it is scary!
My mom loves Fawlty Towers and I gave her a box set one year. I'm not sure if it was ALL the epiosdes or just season one...or what? How many seasons were there? That isn't one they usually show on PBS. We've always enjoyed Keeping Up Appearances Ahhh Stars...those little triplets sound SO Cute! Stars... The Book Thief sounds interesting. Angie... I bet it is nice to have the kiddies back in school... Angie...ClaysLady...Yesterday morning I turned on the news and they were in New Hampshire doing political stuff...and they were in a restaurant eating "canadian" fries, gravy and cheese thingy... Poutine (or sump'in like that) I felt so in-the-know... Speaking of politics...these primaries are surprising. "Change" wanted in Iowa... and Washington regulars in New Hampshire. In other News...that foggy situation in florida is Terrible! A 50 car pile up! And sadly 3 dead. Speaking of food...and fries... we had lunch at Hardee's yesterday...and I'll be having the "2nd half" for lunch today...
Speaking of lunch...and tv...Well...the cable went out yesterday...and I missed Elvis's birthday shows on TCM. Picnic at Hanging Rock... Haunting and enthralling... Picnic at Hanging Rock is one of the most beautiful films ever made. It's a quiet movie that makes you think. Technically, it's perfect. The film is wonderfully directed by Peter Weir. The cinematography is godly, and the exquisite musical score adds a bewitching element that creates an altogether eerie and intriguing atmosphere. On Valentines day in 1900 three schoolgirls and their teacher disappear whilst on a visit to a scenic area in Australia called Hanging Rock. What did happen to those girls and their teacher? This is a very haunting and engaging film that offers no answer to the mystery that develops. However, it is probably better for this, as it allows the viewer to come to their own conclusions. And even though it never explains, the film does give insight of what the others in the school felt about
this tragedy. The personal outlook of the one who saw them for the last time.

I wish I could get past it and see it for being an integral part of a good police story.... still thinking about it. I'm really curious now. Sounds like a winner. |

Good morning ladies. How are you all? Angie, what news from the doc? I hope this one has something definite for you to work with...still can't believe the
way you've been treated.
That's an idea Donna--I can watch the first dvd and go from there. (I can also fast forward through some parts). Thanks for the info on that. Nice pics of Clay Sande! His hair seems to be its original colour again I see. He is definitely "bigger" but I guess that comes with his mature age, right? I admire the creative ways they use to raise money. More power to them. Yes, the ladies stay all year in one class, Sande--a school year--and we don't go over sixteen people to a class. The only time someone new joins the class is when someone leaves, usually snowbirds going to somewhere WARMER. So sad that both your mothers have cancer, Donna and Sande. Things have changed so much though over the past couple of decades, don't you think? I don't know all the stories, of course, but I seem to be hearing of many, many people surviving for years while in remission. The new "hopeful" phrase seems to be "in remission". A good friend of mine was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1997. She died last year--all that time she was in remission. And her life was full--except for the last couple of months. A dear friend--strong and inspirational. On the other hand, an old boyfriend of mine died when he was just forty years old--I think he was dead within eight months of diagnosing pancreatic cancer. That seems to be the most deadly of all. It killed Michael Landon. (I loved his series--was it called Highway to Heaven?) Your poor Dad Sande--that scratch must have hurt badly. Steven still has faded scratch marks on one side of his face--he tried as a six year old to separate two cats which he thought were "fighting".... thank goodness his eyes weren't hurt. They weren't even OUR cats, darn it! We (Rob and I) have never owned cats--I grew up with two Siamese cats who RULED our house, IMO and their disdain for all kinds of supervision drove me crazy. Animals must know who is boss. Now I think of it, they lived to be seventeen years old--is this usual? I've never heard of Hanging Rock, Sande--gosh that sounds so interesting--going to see if I can get the movie. I WONDER what happened to them....scary. Well ladies, off to tidy the house and get some errands done now. Have a good day everyone--Mel, Maureen, Suzi, hope all is well. |
