Besides, from the articles about the show, it seems that the message is to be yourself and not try to be someone else ~ that's why it's said it could be a hit ~ because of its positive message. Isn't that what CLAY says too?

And Clay loves musical theatre. I hope this moves on and makes it to Chicago. Just to hear the references to Clay would be worth it. I just love how this is going to spread, and again--when people think of Idol, they think of the one and only real idol, Mr. Clay Aiken! And I just luv how this has to bug the AI machine to no end!

Is the writer insinuating that Clay (who 'lost' a singing contest') is a "false" Idol and 'tricky', and what does the writer think Clay would "know" if we asked him? Just wondering ...as the meaning or reason for the statement in the context of a review of the show is eluding me.............................. Also just read the "advisories in the Post Standard Review....on the first page of this thread... "Advisories: Language, strong sexual content. " and 'drunkeness for comic effect' Gosh, I don't think it is something I want to go and see or support either. Spoiler it if it makes you feel better. Specifically I want to know how Clay is treated throughout. I want to know what happens in this play that they get to the point of saying 'be your own idol' and 'put your false idol on the shelf'. I mean seriously. One person gives an extremely vague summary and another emails that she was offended with no details revealed here. Why all the secrecy. I think fans should be warned if there is offensive garbage involved with this production. It's common courtesy.

If you look at the advertising, neither Clay's name nor American Idol are referenced. That's why it's IDOL THE MUSICAL, not AMERICAN IDOL THE MUSICAL, IMO. It's only in the articles that Clay is mentioned. It's in the play itself. I don't think he could legally block the use of his name in the play itself since it would be considered satire. I could be wrong. But I would be surprised if Clay was contacted for permission.

It is saying he is a false Idol (the reference to his fans WORSHIP) and he is tricky. I'd be interested to see other interpretations cause I just don't see how this could be positive. Clay did not lend his name or his image to this and to say that he is getting press and that's good is just . . . . ARG! Haven't we learned that not all press is good.

Someone who is a true Clay fan. Unfortunately, I have a feeling this is a show making fun of him. I found out about it because google sends me any articles with Clay's name in it. At first I thought it was a sick joke. Once again the media is having a ball making fun of him when referencing to this show. They may be making something out of it that is not really true. I don't know. But I have a feeling this is one show about Clay that I'm not going to like.

I'm here to comment about the last sentence in the Playbill write-up, which I believe is an allusion to the Jefferson Airplane drug anthem, "White Rabbit": *Quote:* When men on the chessboard Get up and tell you where to go And you've just had some kind of mushroom And your mind is moving slow Go ask Alice I think she'll know My take is that the kind of idolatry depicted in the play is a kind of drug [hey, I can relate!], and that in the end all "idols" are false. I don't think the writer was slamming Clay, but was looking for what he (or she???) thought was a clever ending to the piece. Considering the stuff we as a fanbase have had to endure and that Clay as a public figure has had to endure, taking this line as a "slam" is, imo, making much ado about nothing--or more accurately, fretting about the hazy wording in some piece about a play that isn't really about Clay. As far as I can tell, the play is about idol-worship of the modern kind. Clay is off-scene, the object of adoration, but not a fleshed-out character. IMO, the play is a testimony to Clay's status as a cultural icon. Forty-five years ago, the play would have used Elvis. Remember "Bye, Bye Birdie"?
